Why Get an Annual Heating Tune-Up

We have officially left summer behind and that means cold weather is not far away.  It’s easy to forget to prepare your heating equipment for those inevitable dropping temperatures coming our way this winter. There are several reasons to get your heat pump or furnace ready, but let’s focus on the three most important reasons why you should schedule an annual heating tune-up.

1)  Safe Operation - Gas furnaces use a process that involves a flame and a combustible material (such as natural or propane gas) to create heat for your home. The fact that it involves a flame, however small, should tell you the importance of regular maintenance.    Heating systems without regular maintenance can be a safety concern to you and your family. Incomplete combustion creates dangerous levels of carbon monoxide while small cracks in the heat exchanger can leak gas into your home.   A heating tune-up will ensure your furnace or heat pump operates safely all winter long.

2)  Improved Efficiency - In addition to ensuring safe operation, a heating tune-up will improve the efficiency of your heating equipment.  During the 30 Point Precision Tune-Up, the technician will clean internal parts such as the burner and pilot assembly, and confirm there is proper airflow.  These and other components will be inspected and tuned-up to improve the energy efficiency of your furnace or heat pump.

3)  Reduced Repairs
- Heating equipment breakdowns are frustrating and inconvenient; and they usually happen on the coldest day of winter.  A heating tune-up could help you avoid this situation by having your furnace or heat pump inspected and tuned-up before it’s put to the test.
Heating equipment repairs can be reduced by keeping parts and components in peak condition. Heating Tune-Ups can also catch small problems before they turn into larger, more expensive repairs later.

Cooling System Tips & Checks

General Maintenance
Heating and Cooling uses 49% of your household energy consumption.  Keeping your air conditioning and heating systems working efficiently will decrease your utility costs, the need for additional repair services, and will increase the life of your equipment.

Cooling System Tips & Checks
There are a few simple tips and steps that can help save you money when it comes to running your air conditioner this cooling season.
1.)  Keep the indoor evaporator coil and outdoor condenser coil CLEAN:  The indoor coil in your air conditioner acts as a magnet for dust because of moisture during the cooling season.  Dirt build-up on the indoor and outdoor coil is a common cause of poor efficiency and premature system failure.
2.)  Freon Level: The circulating fluid in your air conditioner is a special refrigerant gas that’s put in when the system is installed.  If the system is not cooling effectively, it may be low on freon and may cause the lines/coil to “freeze” preventing the system from operating correctly. If the system is undercharged, there may be a leak that needs to be located and repaired.  It is imperative to have the refrigerant charge correct to operate efficiently.
3.)  Setting your Thermostat:  Did you know that each degree setting below 78°F increases your energy consumption by approximately 8%.  Simply setting the thermostat at 78°F will save you $$ each month.

General Maintenance

Keeping your heating and air conditioning systems in good working order and repair, will decrease your utility costs, the need for additional heating and cooling services and will increase the life of your equipment.

System Checks
*  Put a note on your calendar to check the air filters every month, change them as needed. Filters may not need replacing every month but a quick check only takes a few seconds. Operating your system with dirty filters hinders system efficiency, wasting your hard earned dollars and can even cause system damage.
* Check your furnace blower compartment, blower wheel and coils. Vacuum them if dusty or dirty. You should also lubricate fan and motor bearings.

Maintenance Scheduling
Schedule a maintenance service call before the heating or cooling season starts. Keep your heating and air conditioning systems operating at peak efficiency.   Don't let a problem go undetected, wasting your energy dollars all season long!
